In 1990 both teams met again during the second round of the World Cup.
This match is seen as the main catalyst for the modern German-Dutch rivalry, in which both Germany and the Netherlands enthusiastically participate.
Before kick-off the Dutch supporters shouted down the Deutschlandlied with boos and the Germans replied by chanting "Deutschland! Deutschland!" during the playing of Het Wilhelmus. The game that followed was notable for its many fouls and other incidents. After Rudi Völler had been hacked down by Frank Rijkaard, who was subsequently booked, Rijkaard spat in Völler's hair. After the following free kick, Völler and the Dutch keeper van Breukelen had contact, both trying to get the ball, and van Breukelen and Rijkaard shouted at Völler and Rijkaard pulled Völler's hair. The referee sent both Rijkaard and Völler off, and Rijkaard spat in Völler's hair a second time when both players left the pitch. Germany won the match 2–1 and went on to win the tournament and become World Champions.

A miss-kick from Ronaldinho or a miss-judgement by Seaman? The England keeper, who was caught off his line in the 1995 Cup Winner’s Cup final by Real Zaragoza’s Nayim, again found himself flat footed as Ronaldinho’s speculative 42-yard free kick dipped at the last. Brazil’s precocious performer was sent off with 30 minutes left for a stamp on Danny Mills, but Brazil never looked like relinquishing their lead.

The highlight of this match was the moment French forward Bruno Bellone was brought down by the keeper. The referee didn't give anything. Jimmy Hill snatched the mic from me and began ranting about the decision. Suddenly Brazil had the ball and were heading up to the other end. I had to wrestle it off him as Socrates missed an open goal. Brazil went out in a penalty shoot-out and the French went on to lose to Germany in the semi-final. It was '82 all over again.

This was a one-sided affair at the 1982 finals in Spain, this came after David Narey's stunning strike gave Scotland the lead in the 18th minute. However, the Brazil 1982 team, arguably the best side never to win a World Cup, hit back in style in Seville with an equaliser by Zico and three second-half goals from Oscar, Eder and Falcao. Scotland would go on to face more World Cup heartache after once again falling at the group stage on goal difference.
